This morning a huge moose ran through our yard. Oh was he big, and he had a huge rack on him. From my angle I couldn't see his height gaged against anything, but Steve said his back was higher than our deck railing, which measures 8'4" tall.
Holy moly! Now we can really understand why hitting one in a car can be so traumatic. The thing likely weighed a ton or more, if you consider the average cow weighs about 1000 lbs.
His gait was cool; it was almost graceful, which kinda surprised me. His body stayed somewhat smooth as he slowly ran diagonally across the back yard where the garden was... Half the garden has been taken down, so the back yard is now more open than it was. He went into the woods in the bottom corner, below the back side of the house and the furthest point of cleared land from the garage.
It must be hard driving that wide rack of his through the forest. Now I understand why they tend to keep themselves on trails.
What a very cool site that was! I don't think I've ever seen a bull moose who was that mature, so it was a spectacular site.
